The Good, The Bad & The Ugly; berry, berry different

2 October, 2011 in Flora

I have been struck just recently by the number of berries on the various trees and shrubs and even more so by the variation of colour in some species of plant, like Hawthorn for example… just take a look at look at these little lovelies:

Hawthorn Berries

Hawthorn Berries - The Good

Hawthorn Berries - The Bad

Hawthorn Berries - The Ugly

Three different looks on bushes just a couple of miles apart… bright, shiny and lush on a young bush in a hedgerow, dried, almost desiccated on a bush beside the salty estuary, and fat, ripe and bursting on a bush beside a drainage reen… The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, so to speak.

Beriberi? Well no, but I do have symptoms.

26 September, 2011 in Flora

No seriously, I do… well some of them anyway. Occasional loss of sensation in my hands and feet, mental confusion/speech difficulties, pain, tingling… all of which are symptoms of dry beriberi. On the other hand I also suffer from awakening at night short of breath, increased heart rate, shortness of breath during activity and swelling of the lower legs, which are all symptoms of wet beriberi… but hey, my diet is good and I’m pretty sure I’m  not lacking Thiamine!

Beriberi aside, are we in for a hard winter do you think? They do say a glut of berries is an indication don’t they…

…and the Hawthorn bushes are absolutely loaded round here! Winter drawers on then… to keep the shivers away.
