The pathway to eternal happiness?

13 December, 2011 in Places

I captured this amazing image while I was on holiday recently in Fueteventura; it’s an ancient lava flow (note the lumps of basalt block in the foreground and gulley) that has become a water-course during the wet season and leading from a blow-hole inland to the coast.

For those interested in such things I took the shot in the early hours of an autumn day… the rising sun illuminated the mountains beautifully for all of five minutes and I used flash to light the lava run (valley/water-course/wadi or whatever) so timing was quite critical. I make no apology for burning out the sky… just one of those things. I’d have been ecstatic if I’d got the exposure/lighting right, believe me.

gr I can’t help thinking if I’d got this shot right I’d have been eternally grateful.

Not quite Death Valley

19 November, 2011 in Places

There are some truly amazing sand dunes on Fuerteventura and it’s well worth parking your car and taking a walk into them if you want to experience a true desert sensation.

Dead Tree

Dead Tree

Yeah okay we’re not exactly talking Death Valley here, but nevertheless there’s very little in the way of green growth except where the dunes form a moisture trap.

I was amazed how quickly the sounds of everyday life disappeared leaving just the gentle rustle of wind-blown sand. I suspect it would be easy for anyone of a nervous disposition to become quite disoriented here and I guess there’s a certain danger to that… I saw only one other human walking in the dunes on my visit and that person was a very long off. Of course there are signs that people have been about.

No Respite Here

But it has to be said, if you were tired and thirty you’d find no respite here. A wonderful place to experience solitude though… especially for someone who enjoys his own company.

Centro de Artesania Molino de Antigua

17 November, 2011 in Places

There seem to be rather a lot of windmills on Fuerteventura, no doubt because of the fairly constant winds that blow over the island. The windmill at Antigua houses a museum and craft centre with beautiful gardens, which makes it a little bit special.

Antigua Windmill

The old maize mill is undoubtedly the main attraction for most visitors and still features the traditional milling equipment that was to produce the flour. The mechanics of the mill have been rather crudely locked down, which leads me to believe the windmill could be easily restored to full operating capacity with the minimum of effort.

The craft centre was something of a let down as far as I’m concerned, but the cactus gardens and the displays of archaeological relics more than made up for that. You’ll also find a small café that serves excellent coffee and ice creams.

I’ve been to Antigua!

15 November, 2011 in Places

Yes gentle followers your old mate Usky has been to Antigua…. just not the one in the sunny Caribbean sea

But hey I did get to Antigua and to prove it:

Antigua Crest

Antigua Town Crest

Antigua is more than a ceramic tile crest though…. it has streets, shops, houses, a church, oh all kinds of things…

One of Antigua’s best attractions is the windmill museum of which more tomorrow, but mean time here’s something interesting… anyone for Trivial Pursuits?

The Montains of Morning

Okay, okay it’s just a simple play on words… but the mountains are stunning in the early morning light and well worth a visit if you happen to be staying on Fuerteventura.

Hot Dawg!

10 November, 2011 in Fauna

Are you a lover of that fine American delicacy the Hot Dawg? No? Me either… too many lips and assholes if you ask me, but then the same apples to your average Mucky burger too doesn’t it? So guess what else I’m not a fan off!

Here’s one hot dog I did find kind of cute though….Hot Dog

…felt quite sorry for the old guy actually since he didn’t seem to know what to do with himself in the midday heat. What do you do when jumping in the sea doesn’t help with the cooling off process?

Virgin Atlantic

10 November, 2011 in Places

I was up and out way before the milkman’s alarm had even gone off… my mission? To capture an Atlantic sunrise.

Driving between Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario on the east coast of Fuerteventura I found myself a likely spot and stopped the car. It was only just 5:00am and still completely dark, so I settled myself down and waited for the first signs of dawn.

Laying back I gazed heavenwards and marvelled at the brilliance and majesty of the night sky; I don’t recall seeing one so stunning since my days at sea and I easily found myself being transported back in my mind to a time before the island was populated by tourists… how wonderfully quiet it must have been then, especially since there was only the gently lapping water to break my morning silence. Staring at those stars made me wish I’d been born in a simpler world… a world less complicated by technology, strife, hunger and greed. In contrast, I also wished I’d had my Nikon with me so I could have taken images of that wonderful night sky… ah well, we can all be contrary can’t we?

The first lightening of the sky was amazing… again I wished I’d packed my ‘professional’ kit, but with the ridiculous baggage restrictions imposed by Ryan Air it simply wasn’t practical. Undeterred I waited a little longer until the great golden orb finally slipped above the horizon, then shot this:

With only those gulls for company I almost felt as though I was looking out at a brand new ocean… gave a whole new meaning to the term Virgin Atlantic to me.

Fuerteventura: Island of Dreams?

9 November, 2011 in Places

Hello again everyone, yes it’s me here and no I didn’t fall off the edge of the world I just took a short break in the Canaries to catch a little late season sunshine before the winter arrives.

As the title of my post suggests and to be more specific, I visited the Spanish island of Fuerteventura, which is the second largest of the Canary Islands, after Tenerife. Being situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa the Canaries enjoy a pleasant climate throughout the year; in fact Fuerteventura is often referred to as the island of eternal spring making it an idea location for a sun-loving Usky as another UK winter approaches. But I’m not here to write an online tour-guide, just to say I’ve been away and now I’m back!

Shadow Man

Shadow Man - I'm just a shadow of my former self!

Despite my best efforts to eat and drink my way into the Guinness Book of Records, the early morning sunlight seems to have stretched me out to make me stick thin!
