Flaming hot!

21 September, 2011 in Flora, Places

No dears not the weather… in fact it’s rather chilly outside this morning, but then it is still early I guess.

No I was looking at some of the other images I took while I was down in Cornwall just recently and among them are a bunch of pictures of chrysanthemums of various types… this one in particular took my fancy because it reminded me in an abstract kind of way of the early years of the Space Race and a command module’s re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere… but then I do have a very vivid imagination!

As usual clicking the image will provide you with an enlarged view of this beauty should you feel so inclined. Should you happen to know the name of this particular flower I’d appreciate you passing it on… I tried calling it Gwladys, Percy and Doris but it refused to answer me!

Unusual, bizarre, and totally stunning!

Hidden away in a sleepy little Cornish town is a very modern, extremely trendy, throw back to the 1960s… I’m talking the Minerva Surf Shack in Perranporth. Yeah okay we all know the north Cornish coast is the surfing mecca for both aging hippy and the young turk alike, so finding a surf shack in a coastal town is kind of expected… what I hadn’t expected to find was the truly superb piece of wall-art hanging outside the surfing emporium.

The Mermaid, St Ives

14 September, 2011 in Places

There’s a really super little seafood restaurant in the ”Down-A-Long” area of St Ives on the appropriately named Fish Street known as The Mermaid and if you’re ever in the area I can thoroughly recommend it.

“Down-A-Long” is the old fishing quarter, which is the older and many say, more attractive part of St. Ives. The Mermaid started life as a “Sail Loft” where sails and nets were stored and mended. However in 1904 the premises became “Tucker’s Pop Factory” owned by the Tucker family, and to this day it is still known affectionately by local people as Tucker’s. The factory closed in the 1950s and became The Mermaid Studio before being converted into a wine bar. The present owners made the jump from wine bar to restaurant in the 1980s and the current Mermaid was born.

I really appreciated efforts of the owners who have captured the character and charm of the old part of town with a great collection of photographs that adorn the walls, portraying the fishing boats and fisherman of St Ives, relatives of which supply the restaurant with lobsters these days.

The food and service is excellent, but don’t just take my word for it make a booking and go and enjoy it for yourselves.

Seeing beneath the service

12 September, 2011 in Places

In my Cool, Clear Water post from a couple of days ago I provided an image I took leaning over a cliff-face in Cornwall and today I’d like to share a similar image with you.

More cool, clear water

More cool, clear water

Known locally as the Celtic Sea, what you’re really looking at is a small part of the Atlantic Ocean; beautiful isn’t it? Clean, clear and cold, this water is a haven for marine wildlife.

Those who know me will tell you if you scratch beneath the surface of Usky you’ll find a rather simple country boy just waiting to escape. I love my native Wales and the wild and windy moors of England, but I always feel very much at home in Cornwall and hope to continue my relationship with the county as life continues.

Padstow, where Rick Stein is king

11 September, 2011 in Places

I called into Padstow while I was down in Cornwall recently for a spot of lunch… well the town has such a wonderful reputation these days driven forward by the great Rick Stein. To be honest I wasn’t that impressed with Stein’s Cafe, though the Seafood Restaurant and Petroc’s Bistro looked a lot more interesting. I’m not really sure how his fish and chip shop can justify £11 a portion for cod & chips though!

I must admit to being hugely amused by Pasty Alley… there must’ve been half a dozen pasty shops next door to each other selling snacks to grockles, many of whom took them to the marina edge for their lunch.

Cool, clear water

10 September, 2011 in Places

Walking along the coastal path in Cornwall, gazing out to sea and marvelling at the depth of colour and clarity of the water, I was moved to take a number of images… one among them was this one, which I took peering over the cliff edge and trying not to think about slipping!

I can’t be certain about the height at which the shot was taken, but would estimate around 120/130 feet. Click the pic for a larger view and see if you can spot the large fish-shaped object.

Another day, another um… day

6 September, 2011 in Places

Tuesday morning, 08:45 and once more I’m sitting here with a cup of coffee having already been to the gym, put a load of washing in the machine, vacuum-cleaned the lounge carpet and generally stooged the net… what else is there to do? Well I suppose I could spring clean the fish tanks, watch some daytime TV, read a book, play guitar… one thing’s for certain, I won’t be going anywhere today with a camera since the rain is lashing down and being driven by strong, gusty winds.

Actually I still have some images to sort from my few days away, so I might just get on with that…

Back to reality…

5 September, 2011 in Places, Uncategorized

So here I am on a Monday morning and suffering from a reality check… it’s only a little after 8:30am and I’ve already been to the gym for my daily workout, showered, dressed, made coffee and am sitting here with my laptop. The skies outside look grey and gloomy, a far cry from the glorious weather I was treated to down in the south west *deep sighs*

I’m not sure what’s on my agenda for the rest of the day… only because I haven’t actually planned anything… but I do have things I need to get on and do… washing… ironing… housework… somehow I think I’d rather be sitting here watching the people and enjoying the sounds of the sea:

Only in Cornwall

4 September, 2011 in Transport

Sometimes you see the strangest things just walking around a strange town… a terraced house with life-sized figurines of a cutlass brandishing pirate and a gorilla… a flag depicting a boxing kangaroo covering the frontage of a holiday cottage… and this, perhaps strangest of all:

Brick-Built Mini

The Cornish car industry’s very own Brick-Built Mini, participant in The Legendary Grand Tour 2011. The brickwork is just a paint-job of course, but the mini certainly catches some attention driving along the road.

Portreath, home of Jenna Hawkey, Olympic athlete

3 September, 2011 in Places

So here I am on the North Cornwall coast at the quiet little resort of Portreath… home of Jenna Hawkey,  international flatwater canoeist and surf lifesaver. Although a surf-girl at heart, Jenna now dedicates her time to training in K1 (kayak singles) and K4 (kayak fours) to pursue her dream of winning gold at the Olympic Games; I for one wish her the very best of luck.

Not too much surf evident at Portreath at the moment, though that hasn’t stopped people flocking to the beach with their boards to enjoy the brilliant September sunshine.

Of course if you get up early enough you can still photograph the bay and make it look devoid of life!
